The Hot Spot 4K 1990

If you love film noir, adore the genre’s style, and enjoy the books by Chandler and Chase—this is the movie for you. If you’re expecting fast-paced, formulaic action movies starring Lundgren and Van Damme—you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Here, every single one of the 120 minutes is so thoroughly steeped in the genre that by the film’s end, its cloying flavor becomes almost unbearably toxic. There might seem to be plenty of similar films out there, but Hopper has infused every detail and situation with so much noir bitterness that connoisseurs will have more than enough to savor. This film will appeal to those who intuitively grasp the genre right from the start, in that stifling, dusty parking lot—and they’ll definitely watch all the way through the credits, relaxing in front of the screen and soaking up every second of this delicious cinematic treat.

Two stunning femmes fatales—the young Jennifer Connelly and the impeccable Virginia Madsen—the soldier of fortune, the dashing Don Johnson, the scorching heat, banks, money, temptations, and… the consequences.

Hopper stripped away all the dynamism, even if it was originally in the script. It’s completely out of place here. He gave all the actions and events a monotonous, drawn-out rhythm from the very first frame, allowing the interested viewer to fully immerse themselves in every moment, in every detail of this neo-noir. The pace of the narrative is like a swamp that very slowly sucks the protagonist in... The dialogue is polished, filled with wit and the obligatory sarcasm. Oh, and what a chic title the creators came up with. What could “hot spot” mean? How many of them are there in this movie?)... That’s left to each viewer’s imagination. The characters are polished to a brilliant shine. Just look at Connelly’s mesmerizing, puppet-like expression—so enchanting that any simpleton would lose their composure—or the truly lethal Madsen, who knocks out not only burly men but probably every streetlamp in her town. The blackmailer is always filthy, both in spirit and appearance (bravo, William Sadler). And Johnson, the utterly brutal scoundrel who’s completely lost his mind, is the very embodiment of those iconic characters from detective novels of the ’40s and ’50s. The casting is one of the key ingredients of the film’s success.

Be sure to look forward to the musical score, featuring jazz-infused trumpet and saxophone interludes that always express and foreshadow doom and fatality.

Connoisseurs, watch and enjoy—this film is definitely a must-have for any neo-noir collection. It will be difficult to replicate something like this, especially given the unique atmosphere of 1990s filmmaking.
