An old movie that, according to recent news, they want to reimagine. Sooner or later, everything has to be revisited from a new perspective. We’ll see how it turns out. For now, I’d like to note that the 1957 film “The Abominable Snowman” is good in its own right.
The snow-covered mountains near Tibet were chosen as the habitat of the mysterious monster. Apparently, that was the most widely accepted scientific view at the time. The famous footage hadn’t been shot or edited yet, so they had to come up with a slightly different theory.
Once again, I’m amazed at how good the dialogue was back then. Almost all black-and-white films are literally brimming with wit and naturalness. Although everything else looks more staged.
The expedition setting out in search of the yeti consists of various members of society: a scientist, a hunter, a photographer, and a leader. The latter, as is usually the case in such situations, has organized everything and has plenty of tricks up his sleeve. And the main character is the scientist.
There aren’t many characters. When the action really heats up, the atmosphere of a gripping thriller takes hold. Apparently, it was even scary back then. But the suspense is simply wonderful. Blizzards rage all around, and you can feel the lack of oxygen. And the deaths are imbued with plenty of symbolism.
The creatures from the title are shown. That pleased me. Toward the end of the film, I’d already assumed the filmmakers would limit themselves to just a shadow. But no, everything is presented in the best traditions of *Harry and the Hendersons*. Only here, there’s no room for comedy.
And the ending even has a moral. It’s purely biological in nature. Humans are destroying this world themselves. The day will come when Homo sapiens will go extinct. And then the era of truly intelligent beings will dawn. Moreover, they will be wiser.
