Personally, I consider this adaptation of the masked vigilante the best work about him after 'The Dark Knight'.
Familiarity with the work of Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and other representatives of the animated series 'Batman - The animated series' began in 2001, when the STS channel started to show it all to the last episode, including the continuation of 'The new Batman adventures' and the parallel 'Superman - The animated series'. On every non-weekend day I waited until 4pm to watch my previously unloved superhero. But after 'Batman Beyond', the story ended.
I started re-watching my favorite series in March 2008. And six months later I came across the first full-length movie of the series.
The first thing I thought after watching 'Batman: Mask of the Phantasm' was, why did it end so quickly and why didn't I watch it sooner? For the first time in my memory a mere 76 minute cartoon surpassed almost all of the Batman movies combined.
The character named Phantasm I haven't met in any other work about the dark knight, therefore it was invented by the creators of the cartoon. And he came out quite successful and will give us a little surprise.
The Joker. Without him the movie would have been worse (like the next part of the same cycle), but he appeared in the second half of the picture, and time flew even faster.
Batman/Bruce Wayne, Alfred, Joker, Bullock and Gordon should already be familiar to us from the animated series, so what to spice them up with? There's a good backstory that runs parallel to the main plot, giving hints about the Joker's and Somebody Else's past and a full-fledged story about the formation of Batman (no worse than in Nolan's movie). The plot has also been diluted with explosions, murder, gunshots, blood and even tears.
Shirley Walker's music makes the picture even more dark and criminal, and I even remembered the initial soundtrack.
All Batman fans should watch it.
