Escape from New York I don't think it's a great movie, yes it's definitely good but nothing more. I watched it more than once, but for some reason I did not touch the sequel, well, the time has come and damn how controversial this movie is.
There is no point in describing the plot. The plot is completely taken from the original, just everywhere stand the cherished words 'again' and 'again'. Oh, and New York is changed to Los Angeles. However, apart from that there are a lot of holes in the storyline. The original 1984 film was a completely finished picture - the destinies of all the characters were brought to a logical conclusion, the ending left a pleasant aftertaste of intrigue. What do we have here? There are characters just for fun, for example, one of the movie's characters is only needed to ride Snake on a surfboard (how is that even possible?). And here is the second minus - goodbye to the gloom and noir of the first film! At first, everything was in the spirit of the original, but at a certain point the film creators were too lazy to maintain the gloomy tone and decided to stuff all sorts of nonsense. The third minus are special effects, I don't know how they looked in '96, but now it looks bad, disgusting work with chromakey.
And now a little bit about the pluses. First of all, Kurt Russell is great as Pliskin! In some places, even better than in the first part, it reeks of pathos, a great actor! The second "plus" is the action, which was sometimes, and sometimes was not bad, so there is nothing else to say. Well, to pull the film extra point due to the same satire that in spite of the wild self-competition in relation to the first film, still drags.
All in all, well, such. You can watch it if you like Kurt Russell or if you're a fan of the first part and are ready to accept the fact that the second part is worse, much worse.
