"Memory" is a new crime thriller (sub-genre - action film with Liam Neeson)) from the director who gave us "Casino Royale" and "The Mask of Zorro".
Let's face it, in recent years Neeson has started to dip the seedbed of the crime thriller (usually coupled with drama as well) too actively. The inevitable result of this has been a drop in the overall quality of the created product. However, he has almost no outright shoddy work either (apart from The Honest Thief). Just passable "B" (pictures of the "B" category).
And then suddenly there is almost a breakthrough. I'll be honest, "Memory" is just a perfect film for Neeson. Perfect to walk away from an action movie nicely. Leave with his head held high. Because he's far from a boy anymore. Isn't it time to get back to his roots - great dramatic roles in quieter movies? The shadows of "Schindler's List" and "The Shameful Prayer" (and many others) really do cry out.
Well, the story of the movie itself... It's pretty typical. There's a tough guy, a gringo, but working for the Mexicans. And he gets some kind of order. Even though he wants to retire for health reasons. But he is rightly told that he can't resign from a very well-paid job like this. And they hand him a puffy envelope. And so this elderly "matador" (we remember the picture of the same name) goes to his homeland, to the States. Everything there is so rotten. And the killer also has his own principles! In general, the story from the classic "The Samurai" with Alain Delon (and lots of other pictures about "noble" murderers for hire) was almost repeated. You could say that the drama succeeded.
But as an action film, the film is also quite good. Even with a rather unexpected plot twist at the very end. and there will also be one pinch, similar to the episode from the drama with the other Hollywood old man. And it was just right.
