The hype around the movie pushed it off the 'to watch' list, and how pleasantly surprised I was when I did watch it.
I liked the musical numbers the most, an immediate return to my childhood - 'The Little Mermaid' was a favorite Disney cartoon.
The few departures from the cartoon's plot didn't hurt at all and brought a freshness. There is no comparison to Anderson's tale, they are different stories to me.
The location looks like an island from the Caribbean (although it wasn't filmed there), the kind of thing I like to look at.
The actors are quite in their place, although for me Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy are a bit outweighed - you can't take your eyes off them, they are so good.
The underwater world took a little getting used to - in the first scenes there is some dissonance between the shooting and graphics. But further on it was not felt, the scene with Sebastian's song Under the sea directly led to delight.
A good fairy-tale movie, I would love to revisit it sometime in the winter evening.
