Saw this movie on the 'Worst Movies of All Time' list, along with other masterpieces. I can't agree with those who see it as nothing but vulgar pornography, devoid of meaning. For starters, it's worth revisiting the source - 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari', because there is already a watchable remake. However, this is a completely separate movie with a stunning aesthetic, which is subordinated to all the plasticity of the actors, these tricks with cigarettes.
You can't agree with the opinion about the lack of plot - it is quite clear and logical, though surreal in the spirit of the movie - the granddaughter of a mad doctor experiments with the pituitary glands of her patients, mixing their bodies and personalities, but as a result she herself turns out to be a patient, imprisoned in the body of her victim. The film's psychedelic imagery and dialog, psychoanalysis and a bit of science fiction make it unique, although, let's not deny, its main value is in its original manner and aesthetics, which is what it coasts on. Naturally, it will appeal more to fans of surrealist painting than to the less sophisticated viewer....
