A fantastic action film by Paul W. S. Anderson. Dark fantasy in a post-apocalyptic atmosphere starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista. It all sounds very appealing, but in reality it turned out to be rather mediocre. The film was very poorly received by audiences and critics. I didn't feel such rejection. The atmosphere is good. Batista and Jovovich look good. Some of the special effects don't look bad either. The dynamics sometimes falter. But the weakest part is the plot itself. With such potential, on the one hand, it seems that there is enormous scope for imagination. On the other hand, there is already too much to compare it to. And so the story itself turned out to be, on the one hand, too derivative, and on the other, too flat. It's as if we are being offered a glimpse into an already accepted and beloved universe. But we know nothing about the characters, and their personalities are poorly developed. We see some reflections and open feelings, but it's as if on an instinctual level, which evokes neither empathy nor compassion.
The plot. The evil queen of a dying world, with traces of a former civilization but with magic, wants to become a werewolf. She hires a witch who is being hunted by the warriors of the church. The witch is played by Milla Jovovich. The church claims the throne and wants to overthrow the queen. The queen loves a commoner warrior, played by Batista. Batista loves his two-headed snake and the wind of freedom. The witch hires Batista to help her find the werewolf's lair, so that she can take his power and give it to the queen. The pair set off on their quest, crossing scorched lands teeming with bandits, monsters, and demons. And behind them, warriors of the church, led by a cruel nun, chase them in an armored train. Well, or whoever she is. That's about it. That's the whole mess and the main plot.
The film was a huge box office flop. But if you really want to see something like this, you can give it a try. But I'm not trying to persuade you.
