Schwarzenegger's character is a former police officer who lost his faith after the death of his wife and daughter. However, fate decrees that he must battle the devil himself to save humanity and prevent the forces of darkness from taking over Earth. In this battle between good and evil, Arnie's character faces a difficult choice between God and the Devil, who is capable of bringing his family back to him.
The film was released at the dawn of the millennium, when the whole world was holding its breath, waiting for something unexpected and supernatural, the end of the world and humanity. Riding the wave of anticipation and capitalizing on the hype surrounding this event, the film's producers bet on box office success (another example being the release of The Omen on June 6, 2006). But as it turned out, audiences reacted differently, and the film flopped at the box office.
A significant role in this was played by the large number of negative reviews from critics, who simply killed and trampled on the film. The film itself even received a couple of nominations for the Golden Raspberry Award.
However, despite all this, the film is undoubtedly well made and fully justifies its budget. A little dark, its atmosphere reminded me of the recent Constantine (which is Lord of Darkness).
And although the genre here is closer to a mystical thriller, towards the end, Arnie, well-armed, goes in his own style to deal with the devil and bring order to Earth.
Many criticize this film for its unsuccessful script and for the fact that Arnold is no longer the same. But personally, I like the picture. Of course, after watching it for the first time (when I was younger), the film seemed much more interesting, impressive, and simply cooler. And the unexpected ending was simply mind-blowing.
And although now “End of Days” looks a little different, after watching it, only positive emotions remain.
