Wendigo is Larry Fessenden's full-length directorial debut. Fessenden is a well-known underground director and producer, founder of the independent studio Glass Eye Pix. It was after seeing this film that I became fascinated with the work of this studio and its director. For fans like me, it is a treasure trove of low-budget but interesting and atmospheric horror films and thrillers.
The film ‘Wendigo’ itself is not a full-fledged horror movie; it is closer to a mystical thriller/drama. The plot is simple but not trivial—we follow an ordinary city family on a trip to the remote countryside. By tragic accident, they hit a deer on the road that local residents were hunting. A conflict erupts—the mentality and way of thinking of big-city dwellers clashes with that of unpredictable provincials. As different as black and white, ice and fire, they come together and a tragic outcome is inevitable. However, ancient, powerful forces notice our characters and decide not to stay on the sidelines. An ancient spirit inhabiting these primeval forests will intervene and play a decisive role.
Most of the film is taken up by a rather dreary narrative of everyday life, slow and unhurried. Disturbing moments emerge gradually, growing stronger and stronger towards the finale. But that's not what makes this thriller remarkable. What caught my attention most was the incredible atmosphere, thick and disturbing, the “ragged” filming and the “twilight” visuals. It's amazing how, with a minimal budget, it's possible to create such a tangible and oppressive atmosphere. Sometimes, in the niche of low-quality and independent films, you can find real gems.
If you are a connoisseur of unusual, rare, and interesting horror films and thrillers, or if you want to watch something special, then be sure to check out this film and all the other works by Glass Eye Pix—you will find many worthwhile things.
