The reality of life comes to the screen to evoke, through its intimacy, a corresponding flood of feelings and emotions in the viewer, who finds themselves in solidarity with the film’s characters. Alice’s story is an unremarkable tale of a lonely woman who, having lost the support of a man on her life’s journey, seeks a chance to restore the balance that has been disrupted. And even though her ex-husband was not the ideal spouse, without him her life has lost its wholeness and meaningful rhythm.
So Alice sets off on a long journey—to find the very happiness that every “normal” woman (or so the statistics seem to suggest) dreams of: to find, with her heart and soul, a close companion with whom she wouldn’t mind spending the rest of her days in a quiet and cozy home.
One failed attempt, then another. A down-to-earth story. Dashed hopes. And the continuation of the journey she began. The simplicity of the plot fosters a sense of closeness, while the actors’ excellent performances elicit empathy from the audience.
Obsessed with her dream, struggling, and facing setbacks, Ellen Burstyn’s character is typical but sincere—as is Harvey Keitel in the role of the frenzied live-in partner, who is successfully replaced by Kris Kristofferson, who manages to charm even the wayward son (Alfred Lutter III), the son of a desperate mother who, with the spontaneous support of her outspoken friend (Diane Ladd), finally finds what, by the rules of the genre, she was bound to find.
