Deranged' is an outstanding psycho-thriller, one of the earliest films, including American films, to vividly demonstrate the extent of destruction from within the human mind. Despite the fact that it saw the world only more than ten years after Hitchcock's iconic 1960 film Psycho, it is in its own way a very interesting and well-made suspense drama based on real events.
After the death of his mother, Ezra Cobb, an unremarkable man, falls into depression, smoothly flowing into a new reality for him, permeated by madness, associated with the unbearable realization of the fact of loss. As a result, six months later he digs up the half-rotten body of his former mother from the grave and brings it home. And no one around him, of course, suspects anything. However, the matter did not stop there. Driven by the ‘voice’ of his mother, the son begins to commit murders of women of different years, leaving their corpses at home ...
Despite the obvious parallel with Hitchcock's creation, the movie ‘Deranged’ contains a number of quite serious differences.
Firstly, it is, as already mentioned, based on a true story, not a book like ‘Psycho’.
Secondly, unlike Norman Bates, the hero of this movie did not aspire to be his mother. Once, however, he appeared in someone else's image, but the movie clearly shows that cross-dressing is not his ‘style’.
Thirdly, Cobb committed all three murders in different locations, and only one in his own home.
Finally, the movie ‘Deranged’ is characterized by more original staging. For example, at the beginning of the movie and in a number of other moments, the audience is presented with a person who tells about these events as if in a documentary, outside the movie.
All of the above allows us to draw a simple conclusion: this movie deserves to be watched. At least out of curiosity.
