Brian Fuller’s colorful and whimsical tale really grabbed me. Not much of it makes sense, but it’s fascinating.

The setting adds to the story’s mystery: an Art Nouveau house that clearly harbors secrets. You’re transported into a fantasy world the moment you step into the entryway, where everything is unusual: an elevator with sliding brass grilles resembling stems, emerald-green walls with floral patterns, and chandeliers with bud-shaped shades. Aurora lives in this house. One day, her parents are swallowed by a monster living under the floorboards.

It’s all in the spirit of children’s horror stories. As soon as twilight falls, the monster begins to stir, creaking somewhere beneath the floorboards, ready to grab anyone on the floor. How can you sleep here? Only under a magical protective blanket!

Exhausted, Aurora takes some money from the nightstand and turns to her hitman neighbor for help, asking him to save her from the monster.

The plot resembles the story of the friendship between Léon and Mathilda (Luc Besson). The film contains elements of dark humor; for example, there are scenes involving dismemberment and the destruction of evidence, which the hitman carries out without the slightest hesitation, right in front of the girl’s eyes. And Aurora, just like Mathilda, is no sweetheart at all, but rather a brave girl who faced loss at an early age—level-headed, sarcastic, yet still a child. She was also able to evoke tender feelings in her hitman neighbor; she chose him so she wouldn’t be alone.

I mean, really, why do adoptive parents choose a child like a commodity at a fair? Why can’t the child herself choose who she wants to live with? Maybe it’s for the best that the girl’s parents were eaten by the monster under the bed? Especially her mom, who locked the girl in a dark room at night with a huge wardrobe—where it’s unclear who lives, with those shadows on the wallpaper from passing cars. A mom who doesn’t read fairy tales, won’t lie down next to you, won’t stroke your head, won’t giggle with you.

As they say: “Don’t be afraid of monsters under the bed. The scariest monsters usually say ‘I love you’ and don’t love you.”

I really liked the duo of actors Mads Mikkelsen and Sophie Sloane; there’s definitely chemistry between them.

I believe 100% in the character of the hitman with a loving heart, who won’t put the girl in danger, no matter what trouble he gets himself into. And even if he deliberately mixes up the girl’s name, we know that she’s dear to him.

Another charming and cynical character is the boss, Laverna, played by Sigourney Weaver. When she says that a child isn’t a person yet and therefore has no right to a voice, her words sound especially cold, like a knife to the heart.

In short, everything in the story is interesting, even the monster, since Aurora created it herself. Back in college, we took personality projective tests. There was a drawing test called “The Non-Existent Animal.” All the elements of a child’s imagination—fur, eyes, a fanged mouth, ears, and other parts of the monster—can be interpreted. The monster is carnivorous but not bloodthirsty; it doesn’t chew on people, but rather swallows them neatly and carries them far, far away. The monster is cute, evoking more of an anxious anticipation and a little laughter. Not really that evil, if you know its rules. But what a big-eared, fluffy little monster with a hairstyle—in short, outwardly very cute, sensual, and tactile.

I took this story as a projective tale about childhood fears, relationships with parents, finding a family, a sense of emotional closeness, and a child’s personal development.

All the embellishments the director brought to the film add a touch of “madness” and style. Spy gadgets, Chinese daggers, street lamps, and dragons—in short, the entire physical world is beautiful and magical.
