It’s surprising that it wasn’t until 2018, when the second *Jurassic World* was released, that the filmmakers remembered the most famous predator of the Jurassic period—the allosaurus. Even if no one had seen the 2001 film *The Lost World*, information about this well-studied theropod (predatory dinosaur) surely would have reached them. In anticipation of the third "Jurassic World" in September 2019, this short film was released, directed by Colin Trevorrow.
It’s nice to see animals on screen whose names don’t make your head hurt from overuse. After all, there are about 500 genera and over 1,000 species of dinosaurs alone, and the prehistoric world wasn’t limited to them. For me personally, the appearance of the Allosaurus here was the main reason to give this review a green rating, as the details of this predator’s encounter with the carefree family raise some objections. The parents’ reaction to their child’s sudden crying seems highly implausible, especially with a 9-meter-long creature with enormous teeth roaming nearby. The outcome of this extreme situation is more than doubtful, which suggests, one must assume, a desire to focus not on the plot, but on the extinct animals.
The Allosaurus’s attack on a man-made object vividly brings to mind similar scenes from the second and third “Parks”. Such visual (and even musical) references are entirely predictable, but what is pleasing is a certain expansion of the universe, however forced it may be. It doesn’t feel like a remake, as in the case of “Star Wars.”
Everyone who saw the post-credits scene in the second “Jurassic World” was waiting to see some additional content. “Battle at Big Rock” is just such an addition, which, in turn, features intriguing inserts during its own credits. We can only hope that the upcoming “Jurassic World 3” turns out to be no worse than the second (or rather, fifth) installment. Don’t let us down, Trevorrow, like you did with the first “Jurassic World”!
